Abstract

This study examines the theme "Do Not Tell Me to Return to Egypt" within theological and cultural contexts, focusing on a biblical-hermeneutical approach and the contextual relevance in understanding the past. The research aims to explore how contextual theology can offer new insights into liberation for the Indigenous Papuans who experience racial discrimination. It also investigates how the confession of faith of the Evangelical Christian Church in Papua can promote social justice, human rights, and respect for the dignity of the Papuan people. The main research question addresses how the biblical event of Egypt can be interpreted in a modern context, particularly in relation to liberation and oppression. The method used is qualitative, employing textual analysis of biblical texts, relevant books, and articles, while also considering evolving social dynamics. The findings indicate that the use of “Egypt” as a symbol in biblical texts often reflects the tension between the hope for liberation and the experience of oppression. This study highlights the contemporary relevance of this theme, as well as its implications for theological and social understanding.
