Abstract

Tanah Papua has been historically and structurally inseparable from conflict dynamics. This study aims to examine the role of Sentani women in communal conflict resolution through the lens of social pastoral theology. Using a qualitative-narrative and pastoral ethnographic approach, this research analyzes the waimam cultural practice as indigenous knowledge that enables women to serve as peace mediators despite operating within a patriarchal structure that limits their access to customary spaces. Findings indicate that Sentani women, through their noken and kani identities, are capable of nurturing face-to-face encounters and constructing new narratives that prevent conflict escalation. Galtung's conflict triangle theory (Attitude-Behavior-Contradiction) and Leatherman's conflict prevention theory serve as analytical frameworks. The research findings are constructed into social pastoral theology through three pastoral praxis steps: confrontation, confirmation, and configuration—which presuppose the church as a conflict-aware community capable of authentic presence amid the struggles of its congregation. The theological implications affirm that face-to-face encounters that nurture communal pathos constitute a relevant locus of practical theology for peace in Tanah Papua.
